The crone is the third and final aspect of the three
fold goddess, she is the dark moon, wintertime, old age, and knower of
mysteries. Is associated with the color black, death and transformation
the krone time brings the harvest of experience where we reap the
accumulated benefits of all that we have learned. We begin our crown
phase with the first appearance of silver hair and embark with her
fully with the coming of menopause. The crown is a teacher or wise one
sometimes called the way shower as she shined the light of wisdom for
all to see. She passes her learning onto the next generation there by
giving roots and genuity to cultural tradition. She brings patients and
seasoning to the raising of children healing of the sick and the
deciding of community issues. Some of her names are Hecate, Cerridwen,
Kali, Baba Yaga, Wind Woman, Morag, Hag o’ the Mill, and Morrigan. She
is also associated with the cat, the snake, and psychedelic herbs. She
is the fairy godmother who have just what we need to overcome the
obstacles in our path. She is the old woman of the ones who lives alone
in a humble cottage and can teach many secrets. In Native American
tradition she is wind woman or medicine woman who heals both body and
soul with her knowledge of magic and herbs.
The Crone and the Dark Maiden
When the moon is dark not quite new but dark in-between stage the Dark
Maiden and the Crone come together and merge residing in the underworld
in dark places such as caves and overgrown forests. She is there to
receive us in death, sleep, or to guide us and give us instruction.
They are seen at the cross roads places of change and choice and in
death or right before or close to death. When selecting one direction
we must forsake others at least for a time for our crone selves give us
the strength and wisdom to make the best choices. In life many choices
have to do with understanding the difference between good and evil. The
crone is the best of guides in such decisions for none knows as well as
she what the outcome is likely to be. In the maiden-mother-crone or
triadic thinking we can find liberation from the old patriarchal
dualism of good versus evil.
