The Goddess Isis was a wife, mother, daughter and sister. She was known by a thousand names but her name literally meant “Throne”. The birthplace of the Goddess Isis remains a mystery but it is believed that she born in the Egyptian region. The Southern region has been associated with Isis and it’s during the time period of 2686-2181 BCE, the Greco Roman period. Although there remain many questions concerning her birthplace there is a great chance that she is a true Egyptian. Isis was accepted as a key figure in the Greco-Roman period and people loved her.  She was the daughter of Nut and Geb, wife to Osiris, sister to Osiris, Nebt Het, Set, and Heru the Elder. Isis is known to have three children named Horus, Bast and Heru Sa Aset.

The Goddess Isis has been known to have associated many of the Greek Goddesses as well as many of the Egyptian Goddesses during the 305-330 BC time period. Some of her known associations would have been Hathor, Bastet, Nut, Serket and Seshat to name a few. The Greek Goddesses she had association with during the latter part of life would have been Astarte, Demeter and Ceres.

Isis was a household name as Christianity was beginning to the shape and there were many shrines dedicated to the Goddess. As Christianity began to grow in the region the worshipers of Isis began to dwindle and the service as well as the worship to the goddess began to die. A majority of the changes in worship to Isis and the growth of Christianity happened during the Sixth Century AD. Around 550 AD the last temple closed but Isis was still worshiped but the type of worship and the venue changed. Many of the local leaders felt that her cult was destructive and some even declared that her rituals were pornographic.

Isis had many festivals that were dedicated to her and the festivals occurred on a monthly basis. The Festival of Lights, Isis Giver of Life and Night of the Teardrop of Isis were a few of the festivals that honored Isis. The festivals occurred monthly and it is believed that they were either Civil or religious based in the dual calendars. The ankh is one of the primary amulets that many identify with Isis but the tyet also known as the “Isis Knot” is also closely associated with Goddess Isis. It resembles the ankh but the arms are lowered to the sides and it means welfare or life just as the ankh.  Days associated with Isis are Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.

The Goddess Isis was called the Goddess of the Harvest, Goddess of the Fertility Field, Lady of Bread and Beer and Lady of Green Crops.  The names often implied that Isis liked those foods and beverages such as bread and beer. Favorite foods of Goddess Isis believed to be beans, corn, grains, bread, milk, nuts, honey, seafood, wheat, grapes and various fruits. Palm trees were sacred to Isis. Even though the Heart of Palm is edible, Isis believed to eat the Heart of Palm would kill the tree. There was limited meat due to animals being sacrificed.

Isis likes the following scents:  sandalwood, myrrh, cinnamon and sweet orange. She is represented by the crocodile, scorpion, cobra and cow. Isis is partial to the scarab and most if the scarabs during that time were made from obsidian, amethyst, bloodstone and Lapis Lazuli. Her favorite colors are silver, black, gold, white, cobalt blue and red. She has a fondness for all flowers but especially the lotus flower but has accepted various flowers at festivals and as offerings.  Her favorite tree is the Sycamore Tree. Isis has favored the following stones: amethyst, bloodstone, moonstone, pearl, coral and Lapis Luzuli. The candle color associated with Isis is green.

Teach me O Goddess Isis, that I may find wisdom and the true meaning to who you are and who I am.  Allow me to spend time with you. I belong to you O Goddess Isis and I thank you for lighting my path and for your protection. I adore you.
