The Legend of Sedna

Sedna was a beautiful daughter of a widower who had many suitors, none of which interests her. Her father constantly persuaded her to accept a suitor to take as a husband but Sedna kept dismissing all who would offer. One day a handsome hunter came and Sednas father convinced her to marry him. He had won Sedna over and she agreed. She was taken to the land where he lived which was not as Sedna had expected. The handsome suitor was not man at all, but a Kokksaut, a petrel spirit, in diguise who lived in the land of birds. Sedna felt betrayed in discovery his true nature. Her living conditions were horrible. She had no shelter, and lived on bare rocks among the cliffs. Sedna cried out in misery and her cried were carried off into the artic winds where they reached her father. Her father came to rescue her, having felt guilty for persuading Sedna to marry her husband. As they fled, Sednas husband was not about to let her go so easily and he persued them as they made thier voyage across the ocean to home. The Kokksaut transformed into his real form and summoned a wicked storm. Sednas father became very frightened and paniced. To save himselfhe chose to sacrifice his daughter, throwing her off the boat and into the raging icy waters. Sedna desperatly grabbed the side of the boat, her body going numb from the frigid water. She screamed and struggled to cling to the boat. Her father grabbed a paddle and began pounding on her fingers to get her to let go. Her forzen fingers cracked, falling into the ocean, transforming into sea creatures. Sedna still attempting to save herself once again tried to cling to the boat, her father once again pounded her hands with the paddles. Sednas hands now frozen completely cracked off. They drifted to the bottom of the ocean and once again transformed into larger sea creatures. Sedna could fight now more and she herself sank to the bottom of the ocean. She lives in a house of whale bones and rocks at the bottom of the artic sea in a place known as Adlivan- the icy underworld.

Sednas Magick and Lore: Customs of the Inuit Culture who honor her

Inuit Shamans take great care to please Sedna as she is the giver and taker of life among thier people. SHe holds thier fate. Her anger and fury against men is beleived to drum up violent storms. When she is calmed by the Shamans the sea is kept calm and she releases the mammels to allow the Inuit to eat from the bounty of the sea. Inuit Shamans will journey to her astrally, transforming themselves into fish taking a comb to ritually comb her hair, long and tangled, because she can not so it herself with her missing hands. They will massgae her aching muscles and clean her scales, showing servitude. They treat her with compassion and hope to gain her wisdom.
It is also legend that she is willing to provide for her people as long as they follow her rules. For three days after a death, the souls of her animals would remain inthier bodies watching for violations of Sednas demands. Then they returned to the Goddess, bearing information about the conduct of her people. Should her laws be broken, her hands would begin to ache and she would punish her people with storms, sickness, and starvation. Only when a Shaman travelled to her and conforted her pain would order be restored and her anger lifted.

Sednas Magick and Message for us

Sednas story is one of betrayal and of anger. She is a reminder that we all have negative qualities we must learn to control. However even in possesing these qualities within ourselves does not immediatly negate our being deserving of love and respect. In spite of our short comings nad our mistake, or wrong doings done to us by others that in which we struggle with forgiveness we still have the right to be treated well by others, as should be strive to do the same for others ourself. Sedna is the Goddess that got a new life. For those who have been betrayed, harbor anger, feel as though they suffer and are wounded there too can be new life. Suffering, death and rebirth are her story. She teaches us that we can survive and transform ourselves. Strength can be found in hurting. We do not have to remain a victim.

From the Goddess Oracles her message reads:
My fingers were cut off. I was kicked. I was hurt. I was wounded. I was lied to. I was betrayed. I was abandoned. My suffering was great, but down below in the deeps in the heart of the ocean where I was left to die I realized my powelessness the way my life was lived. Helpless and afraid alsways being done to instead of doing and I saw what I did. As realization expanded my conscienceness fish and sea mammles grew out of my cut fingers. I became old food dish- she who provided for her people. VICTIM NO MORE!
Sedna tells us to take back our power! She is a lesson in deep buried anger and feeling powerless. Disowned anger can lead to depression. Her wisdom teaches us that this anger is powerful and the buried emotions needs to be accessed, scknowledged and released in a a safe manner.
In 365 Goddess in reading about Sedna (June 26th) it reads that you can keep a small token in your home that will continually draw Sednas blessings to you. Get a Goldfish and name it after her. Each time you feed the fish you are symbolically giving an offering to her. WHen you have a need, whisper it to the fish and Sedna will hear you.

A spell working of my own:

To work the magick that Sedna offers us I came up with this spell.
You will need a small plastic container such as a butter container or tupperware. Fill the container with water. place it in various sea items such as seashells ect. Take a peice of paper and on it write down how you feel you may have been wronged at some time of your life. Write about your anger you feel about this. Hold the paper in you hands when you are finished writing and meditate upon the peace of forgiveness. Forgiveness is not for those who have wronged us, but rather releases us from the chains that come with it that bind us, that hold us back. Once we can reach this forgiveness we are unleashed, free and the anger, the hurt is replaced with a sense of well-being and peace that allows us to replace the victim within us with the warrior who overcame this pain. Place the paper into the water and put it into the freezer allowing it to fully freeze. Once frozen remove from the freezer and take out the ice block from the container. To do this you may need to dip it into warm water for a few minutes. Take this block of ice and throw it into a body of water. As the ice dissolves your pain will be taken to Sedna who will hear you, and she understands and will send you comfort and compassion to help you on your way to healing. Know that it is done.

Astrological information about the discovery of a planet that was named Sedna

Sedna the planet is the most distant place known in our solar system that we are aware of. Discovered on March 15, 2004 by astronomers from Caltech Gemini Observeratory and Yale University it wasw announced that they had discovered a very cold and frigid planet that they named after Sedna. It is 90 times greater distance from the sun then that of the Earth, 3 times further then Pluto. Sedna is so far away that if you were stnading on it you could block the entire sun with the head of a pin just by holding it at arms length. Sedna is also one of the reddish objects in our solar system besides Mars although it is not know why.

This is a video that I created for my project.
